Dr. Demetriou is the former Chairman, Department of Surgery and the Esther and Marck Schulman Chair in Surgery and Transplantation Medicine at Cedars-Sinai, Los Angeles, California. Additionally, he was Professor of Surgery and Vice Chairman of the Department of Surgery at UCLA School of Medicine, Los Angeles.
His clinical and research areas of interest are: bio artificial liver support, liver diseases, wound and colon healing, cell transplantation, gene therapy, and pancreas, liver and intestine transplantation.
A frequent national and international visiting professor and speaker, Dr. Demetriou has received many honors and awards, such as The Esther and Marck Schulman Chair in Surgery and Transplantation Medicine; “Honoris Causa” doctor of Medicine degree, University of Athens, Greece; and William Hillman Award for Excellence in Teaching as a House Officer, Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, U.S.
Dr. Demetriou serves as Journal Reviewer for the American Journal of Physiology, Journal of Hepatology, and New England Journal of Medicine. He has published and presented more than 200 papers, and he has over 45 books and several chapters on his list as well.
