Named the seventh B.K. Rachford Memorial Chair in Pediatrics in April of 2007, Dr. Arnold Strauss also holds the title of Chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the UC College of Medicine and the Chief Medical Officer of Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He was formerly the chairman of the Department of Pediatrics at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Medical Director of the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital at Vanderbilt. Dr. Strauss was also the Director of the Division of Pediatric Cardiology at Washington University/St. Louis Children’s Hospital from 1981 to 2000.
Dr. Strauss dedicates much of his time to research and his main focus is understanding the molecular basis of disorders of mitochondrial fatty acid oxidation and the genetic causes of congenital heart disease and cardiomyopathies. Through this research, he has been awarded both the American Heart Association’s Basic Science Research Award for discovering the genetic defects that can cause heart failure in children and the E. Mead Johnson Award for Excellence in Pediatric Research.
Additionally, Dr. Strauss was named on the acclaimed list, ‘Best Doctors in America’ consecutively since 1994. He also received the Established Investigator of the American Heart Association award and the Alumni Faculty Award. He is a member of the following professional organizations: American Society of Clinical Investigation, Society for Pediatric Research, Association of American Physicians, NH Cardiovascular A Study Section and the NHLBI Task Force on Pediatric Cardiovascular Medicine. He is a new member of the Institute of Medicine. Dr. Strauss was also the Associate Editor of Pediatric Research and is on the Editorial Board of Pediatrics.
