Dr. Friedman's major area of clinical investigation is in the therapy of children and adults with newly diagnosed and recurrent brain tumors. He designs the clinical trials for all children and adults with brain tumors seen at Duke (seeing 60-70 new patients per month).
Following his post doctoral training at Upstate Medical Center with an internship and residency in pediatrics and then a fellowship in Pediatric Hematology Oncology, Dr. Friedman was appointed to senior research fellow of Pediatric Hematology Oncology for Duke University Medical Center. Here he started his academic career as Assistant Professor in pediatrics and as an Assistant Professor in pathology.
In 1990, Dr. Friedman received the F. Wayne Rundles Award for Outstanding Cancer Research at Duke University. He participates in a number of medical organizations and societies including; Pediatric Oncology Group, Brain Tumor Core Committee, American Society for Clinical Investigation, American Society of Clinical Oncology: Cancer Education Committee, American Association of Neuropathology, American Association for Advancement of Science, and American Association for Cancer Research.
He has reviewed over 300 refereed journals and 21 manuscripts for leading medical journals, and has authored or co-authored 21 book chapters. Additionally, Dr. Friedman sits on the editorial boards for Clinical Cancer Research, Cancer (Associate Editor of Neuro-oncology), and the Oncologic Drugs Advisory Committee (Peds Subcommittee) of the Food and Drug Agency.
