Dr. Sbarbaro is currently Professor of Medicine and Preventive Medicine at the University of Colorado Health Sciences Center School of Medicine in Denver, Colorado. He also serves as Medical Director of University Physicians, Inc., a multi-specialty group practice of faculty physicians and ancillary health care providers at the University of Colorado School of Medicine. Dr. Sbarbaro’s clinical interest and research specialty is tuberculosis treatment in adults and children.
He graduated from St. Mary’s College, Winona, Minnesota, summa cum laude and went on to earn his medical degree from Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland in 1962.
His post-doctoral training began with a residency and internship at the University of Illinois; now Rush Medical School. From 1965-1967 Dr. Sbarbaro served as Surgeon of the U.S. Public Health Service; National Centers for Disease Control, Tuberculosis Branch and was assigned to the City & County of Denver as its Tuberculosis Control Officer. By 1968, Dr. Sbarbaro received his Master of Public Health degree from Harvard School of Public Health, Boston, Massachusetts. Starting in 1981, Dr. Sbarbaro joined the United States Army Reserve Medical Corp. and held the rank of Colonel. He performed active duty in 1991 for seven months during Desert Storm.
Dr. Sbarbaro has received many awards and distinctions through out his career. In 1967, he was featured in Look Magazine, in an article titled, "The Revolution in Medicine, A New Kind of Care". He won in 1976 the American Lung Association of Colorado’s James J. Waring Award for Outstanding Contributions to the Prevention and Control of Lung Disease. Additionally, for his performance in Desert Storm, he received from the United States Army the Meritorious Service Medal, 1991. By 1994, Dr. Sbarbaro was named to the Best Doctors in America and Who's Who in North America in 1995. In addition since 1998, he has been named the Who’s Who in Medicine and Healthcare.
Dr. Sbarbaro is a part of many professional organizations. A few of them include: Colorado Medical Society, American College of Preventive Medicine, American Thoracic Society, American Medical Association, American College of Chest Physicians, International Union Against TB and Lung Diseases, American College of Physician Executives, American Public Health Association.
He also has been an active committee and board member for a number of non-profit organizations. They included; The United Way, American Lung Association, American Red Cross, Colorado Heart Association, American Society for Tuberculosis and Colorado Access, a non-profit HMO.
