Dr. Pohl began working for the Cleveland Clinic in 1973. He has served in numerous appointments, including: Chairman, Medical Advisory Board of the Kidney Foundation of Ohio; Head of the Home Hemodialysis Training Program for the Cleveland Clinic Foundation; Acting Chief, Dialysis And Transplantation Programs Services, Health Services and Mental Health Administration (military appointment); Senior Clinical Instructor in Medicine at the Case Western University School of Medicine, Cleveland, Ohio.  He is currently the Head of the Section of Clinical Hypertension and Nephrology and Director of the Center for Blood Pressure Disorders.  He specializes in diabetic nephropathy, hypertension, renal disease, renovascular disease, systemic lupus erythematosus, and hypertension.

Dr. Pohl participated as a co-chairman in several research study groups related to Adult Nephrotic Syndrome and/or Lupus Nephritis. He is the author of over 80 scientific articles, 90 abstracts and several book chapters.   He has been a co-investigator in several important trials, including the Collaborative Study of Adult Nephrotic Syndrome and Adult Glomerular Disease, the Lupus Nephritis Collaborative Study Group, the North American Adult Nephrotic Syndrome, and the Collaborative Study Group.  Dr. Pohl also teaches and presents at numerous national and international symposia and postgraduate courses in nephrology and hypertension.

Additionally, Dr. Pohl has received several recognition awards, including: Golden Kidney Award for Excellence in Teaching, Department of Hypertension and Nephrology at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation (awarded twice) and inclusion in several editions of The Best Doctors in America. Dr. Pohl belongs to several societies and associations, including: the American Society of Nephrology, International Society of Nephrology, American Heart Association, National Kidney Foundation and the American Society of Hypertension.
