Dr. Martin Wolfe is considered by the medical world to be the father of travel medicine. He is currently the Director of Traveler’s Medical Service of Washington, tropical medicine consultant to the Department of State and the Peace Corps, and a clinical professor at the George Washington University Hospital and the Georgetown University Medical School. Dr. Wolfe is also on the editorial board for Medicineplanet, a website that provides information, guidelines and counsel for the international traveler.

After completing his medical school training and internship at Cornell-Bellvue Hospital, Dr. Wolfe spent two years in Ghana studying schistosomiasis for the NIH West Africa Research Laboratory. He then returned to school as an internal medicine resident at Cornell while subsequently attending the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. After receiving his Diploma in Clinical Medicine of the Tropics, Dr. Wolfe spent two years in Lahore Pakistan at the University of Maryland International Center for Medical Research Training (ICMRT).

When Dr. Wolfe finally returned to the United States, he was hired to the Office of Medical Services in the US Department of State, overlooking care for thousands of State Department personnel. In conjunction with this appointment, Dr. Wolfe also managed to start a private diagnostic parasitology laboratory, an independently-run practice for those people seeking a tropical medicine consultation and one of the first travel clinics in the United States.

Dr. Martin Wolfe is also active in the many boards and institutes of the Tropical Medicine field, including: the American Society of Tropical Medicine and Hygiene, American Committee on Clinical Tropical Medicine and Traveler’s Health, Armed Forces Epidemiology Board and the Infectious Disease Society of America. He received the Ben Kean Award from the ASTMH and, more recently, was honored by having the latest volume of Infectious Disease Clinics of North America dedicated to him. Dr. Wolfe has contributed over 135 articles and chapters about tropical and travel medicine.
