During his residency training at the University of Virginia, Dr. Dacey was awarded an American College of Surgeons Schering Scholar. Following his post-graduate training, he became an Assistant Professor of Neurological Surgery at the University of Washington. He subsequently became Professor and Chief of the Division of Neurosurgery at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

Dr. Dacey has an active general practice of neurosurgery and a special interest in cerebrovascular neurosurgery, the surgery of cerebral aneurysm and vascular malformations. His research activities have concentrated primarily on the area of the physiology of intracerebral microcirculation, and he was awarded a Clinician Investigator Development award by the National Institute of Health. Dr. Dacey also has a patent for the Methods of, and Materials for, Treating Vascular Defects with Magnetically Controllable Hydrogels.

Dr. Dacey currently is the Secretary of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and was President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He is a member of a number of medical associations and is the consultant neurosurgeon for many professional teams.
