Dr. Robert Hermann served as the Chairman of the Department of General Surgery at the Cleveland Clinic for 23 years, from 1969 to 1992. He currently acts as an Emeritus Consultant and Past Chairman of the Department.

Dr. Hermann earned his medical degree from Washington University Medical School in Saint Louis, Missouri, after receiving his Bachelor of Arts cum laude from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. He completed his residency and internship at the University Hospitals of Cleveland in Ohio. During his training, Dr. Hermann also served as a Captain in the United States Army Medical Service and was assigned to the U.S. Army Hospital in Munich, Germany. Dr. Hermann joined the staff of the Cleveland Clinic in the Department of General Surgery in 1962.

Throughout his active career, Dr. Hermann’s surgical and research interests included upper digestive problems, liver, biliary, pancreatic and stomach diseases, and breast cancer. In addition to his extensive surgical experience, Dr. Hermann’s administrative appointments have included President of the Medical Staff of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, member of the Board of Trustees of the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and as Medical Director of the Cleveland Clinic Alumni Association.

Extremely active in local, national and international professional societies, Dr. Hermann holds Honorary Membership in fourteen surgical societies and has served as the President of six of these organizations. Dr. Hermann’s awards and honors include American College of Surgeons Distinguished Service Award, the Special Achievement Alumni Award from the Cleveland Clinic Foundation, and the Distinguished Alumni Award from Washington University School of Medicine.

Since retiring from surgery, Dr. Hermann has focused his efforts on quality assurance and continuous quality improvement in healthcare, and served on the Board of the Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations, which sets the standards by which healthcare quality is measured in the United States and around the world. In addition, he published 190 papers, 53 book chapters and two books on surgery.
