The Cleveland Clinic
Dr. Fazio's clinical interests are Crohn’s disease and ulcerative colitis, colorectal cancer, and pelvic floor reservoir procedures for ulcerative colitis and familial polyposis. He pioneered the use of innovative techniques that allow patients to avoid the need for colostomies. Dr. Fazio is the former Chairman of Colorectal Surgery and the Digestive Disease Institute at Cleveland Clinic.
He received his medical degree from the University of Sydney Medical School and completed his surgical training at St. Vincent’s Hospital and at the Lahey Clinic in Boston. He concluded subspecialty training in collateral surgery at the Cleveland Clinic Foundation under the mentorship of the late Rupert Turnbull. In 1995, he was given the Rupert B. Turnbull Chair at the Cleveland Clinic.
He served as President of the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons as well as President of the American Board of Colon Rectal Surgery. In 2000, Dr. Fazio was the first recipient of the Master Clinician Award, given to one of 1500 Cleveland Clinic physicians at the Cleveland Clinic. In addition, Dr. Fazio was named one of the country's top cancer doctors for women from Good Housekeeping magazine and one of the best doctors in America from American Health magazine. He also was awarded the Premier Physician Award from the Crohn's & Colitis Foundation in 1992.
Dr. Fazio has authored or co-authored 10 books and over 500 articles.
