Dr. Andersson currently serves as The William A. Hark, M.D. – Susanne G. Swift Professor and Chairman of Orthopedic Surgery at Rush University Medical Center in Chicago. In addition he is a professor at the College of Engineering and Bioengineering at the University of Illinois.Dr. Andersson's clinical interests are intervertebral disc biology, biomechanics and epidemiology of back pain. He has been at the forefront of spine surgery research and education for more than 30 years and is credited with designing the seat in Volvo automobiles.He received his medical degree from the University of Goteborg and completed his residency at Sahlgren Hospital, University of Goteborg, in Sweden. He completed his fellowship in orthopedics at The London Hospital in London, England. He spent most of his formative years as an orthopedic surgeon at Sahlgren Hospital, the University of Goteborg, in Sweden and came to this country as a visiting professor in 1976 before moving permanently here in 1985.Dr. Andersson is a member of numerous organizations and societies dealing with research and care of back patients including: American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons, American Orthopedic Association, Orthopedic Research Society, North American Spine Society, and the International Society for the Study of the Lumbar SpineIn 2002, Dr. Andersson was awarded with ISSLS Stryker Spine Lifetime Achievement Award. In addition, Dr. Andersson has been honored with the distinction of Chicago’s top doctor in 1998 and 2001.Dr. Andersson has author and co-author of more than 200 academic papers and over 150 books and book chapters mostly related to back pain and back injuries. Dr. Andersson is a journal reviewer and sits on a number of editorial boards including Spine, Clinical Biomechanics, Orthopedics Today and Contemporary Spine Surgery, where he is Editor-in-Chief.
