We recently received an urgent post-midnight email from the son of one of our members explaining that his mother had just been diagnosed with glaucoma and the doctor wanted to operate immediately. Could we get her a second opinion ASAP?

We discovered that she had seen a doctor highlighted in a Medical Intelligence Report we had previously prepared. She had failed the peripheral vision test because she was using her hand compromised by arthritis; her intraocular pressure was up that day; and the doctor had evaluated her existing cataracts, concluding that she needed immediate surgery. She had also seen a podiatrist who told her that she might lose her ability to walk if she didn’t follow his advice.

With bad news coming at her from all directions, the member was, understandably, a nervous wreck. Going to these appointments alone, without her husband or PinnacleCare, had resulted in an emotional meltdown.

We calmed the member and sent a reassuring email to her son.

Her son responded, “First of all, I want to thank you for the quick response to my email, and for then taking the time to call both of my parents today. Second, I want to tell you, as a professional myself, that this kind of responsiveness absolutely sets the standard.

Finally, the first thing out of my mouth last night when my mother spoke to me was ‘Did you speak to the PinnacleCare folks about this?’ I will continue to encourage her to do so.
