A Member located in the southeast had been diagnosed with a brain tumor. He had recently received a CT Scan and MRI from his local hospital and had the images from these tests saved on a CD.

The surgery that PinnacleCare had scheduled for the Member was to take place in two days. However, the PinnacleCare team and the Member wanted to receive a second opinion from a physician at a hospital in California before he went into surgery. This allowed only a few hours until the close of business that evening to send the CT Scan and MRI images to the physician, and still leave him enough time to obtain a second opinion.

PinnacleCare’s Systems Manager immediately thought of a solution. He decided to use a secure internet site to transfer and store the data. The Systems Manager contacted PinnacleCare’s in-house Web Manager to create a new site.

Once the site was created, the PinnacleCare team contacted the Member to download the images onto the site. When the Web Manager confirmed that all of the images were downloaded, he created an even more secure site to store the images and password-protected it. He then sent the physician in California the link and password for him to view the images.

Shortly after, the physician called PinnacleCare’s Headquarters to confirm that he was able to access the images, and was in the process of providing the Member with the second opinion he required.
