Dr. Basil Zitelli joined both the Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh’s Diagnostic Referral Service and the faculty of the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine in 1978. He was appointed to the Chief of the Diagnostic Referral Service in 2002 and since then has been an integral part in expanding the division and increasing the use of its services dramatically. While still maintaining some of the highest patient loads within the hospital, Diagnostic Referral specializes in diagnosing and managing a wide range of complex pediatric medical conditions. In fact, in 2004, Diagnostic Referral had more discharges and more observation patients than any other hospital division.

After completing his medical degree at the University of Pittsburgh, Dr. Zitelli fulfilled his pediatric training at Johns Hopkins Hospital. After serving two years in the military, Dr. Zitelli returned to Johns Hopkins Hospital for more training and an appointment as the Chief Resident in Pediatrics from 1976-1978.

Dr. Zitelli has given much of his time to teaching fellow and future doctors. In addition to the training that he offers medical students and residents in the Diagnostic Referral Service, he also teaches Pediatrics at University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine and has been doing so for over 30 years. He was awarded the Physicians Recognition Award for Continuing Education by the American Medical Association and the 2004 Academy of Masters of Medical Education, Steering Committee, by the University of Pittsburgh School of Medicine for his commitment to education. Dr. Zitelli is also a member of several professional organizations, including: the Ambulatory Pediatric Association, Society of Hospital Medicine and American Academy of Pediatrics, Section on Hospital Medicine. He has been named the “most highly recommended” pediatrician in the Pittsburgh area and was the 2003 Recipient of the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center’s Award for Commitment and Excellence in Service and in 2002 was selected by the American Academy of Pediatrics, Pennsylvania Chapter, as Pediatrician of the Year.

In addition to being the Senior Editor of the Atlas of Pediatric Physical Diagnosis and the Co-Editor of Common and Chronic Symptoms in Pediatrics, Dr. Zitelli has been the author of over 130 published journal articles, books, book chapters, review and other publications.
