Gilbert H. Mudge, M.D.
Dr. Mudge was appointed Vice President for International Programs for Partners Healthcare in 2011. Past and other leadership responsibilities include his role as Director of Brigham Cardiovascular Consultants, Director of the Cardiac Transplant Service at Brigham and Women’s Hospital (BWH), Massachusetts, Senior Medical Advisor to Partners International and is Associate Professor of Medicine, Senior Physician, Chairman of the International and Telemedicine Program and member of the Internship Selection Committee for the Department of Medicine.
His clinical areas of interest are cardiovascular diseases, congestive heart failure and heart transplantation. Dr. Mudge initiated an outreach program in heart failure and transplantation at Maine Medical Center, targeting heart transplant patients and those with mechanical assist devices, whom are arguably the most complex cardiovascular disease patient population. This clinical commitment represents care for patients of high and unusual complexity with expertise that is not available in that state. In addition, Dr. Mudge was asked to start the first heart transplant program in New England in 1983, and has followed over 490 such patients to date.
He received his doctorate from Columbia University College of Physicians and Surgeons, New York. After completing his internship and residency in internal medicine at the Presbyterian Hospital in New York, Dr. Mudge continued his postgraduate medical training with research fellowships specializing in cardiovascular diseases at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital and Harvard Medical School. He continues to serve as a consultant to many medical institutions including West Roxbury Veterans Administration Medical Center and the Dana-Farber Cancer Institute.
Dr. Mudge is an active member of many institutions including the International Society for Heart and Lung Transplantation, American Heart Association and the American College of Cardiology.
He was awarded the Samuel A. Levine Research Fellow of the American Heart Association in 1975 and elected to American Clinical and Climatological Association in 1991. He was honored with a Partners In Excellence Award – for Physician Directory, (1996) and one in 2000 for the United Arab Emirates project which included coordination of patient referrals, visiting physicians and a robust telemedicine program.
Dr. Mudge has been invited to give over 400 lectures on topics that included coronary artery spasm, coronary endothelial dysfunction, coronary artery disease, medical verses surgical therapy of CAD, heart transplantation, allograft coronary artery disease, congestive heart failure, and the future of academic cardiology. He also serves as a reviewer for a series of prestigious medical journals including New England Journal of Medicine, the Journal of Heart and Lung Transplantation and the American Journal of Cardiology.
