Joseph D. Zuckerman, M.D.

Orthopedic Surgery

From 1990 to 2006, Dr. Zuckerman was director of the New York University Hospital of Joint Diseases’ orthopedic surgery residency program, which is recognized as the largest in the country. Currently, as the Chairman of the Department of Orthapaedic Surgery of the Hospital of Joint Diseases, Dr. Zuckerman is a renowned expert in orthopedic surgery with clinical specialties in shoulder surgery and joint, hip and knee replacement surgeries. Non-cemented replacements with alternative bearing surfaces and minimally invasive surgical techniques are his preferred approaches to hip and knee replacement. His extensive experience includes performing over 1500 hip and knee replacements.

Dr. Zuckerman is past President of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons (2009) and has been recognized as Alumnus of the Year by the Medical College of Wisconsin Alumni Association and Teacher of the Year by New York University Hospital for Joint Diseases’ Orthopedic Residency Program. Additionally, he was honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award by the New York Chapter of the Arthritis Foundation, Mel Post Award for Excellence in Clinical Research by the American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons and the Orthopedic Research and Education Foundation Clinical Award for Hip Fractures: A Comprehensive Clinical and Research Approach.

Dr. Zuckerman is a member of the Executive Committee of the Medical Board of NYU Medical Center, and a member of the Surgical Chair Committee/Perioperative Services Committee. He also previously served as the Chief of Shoulder Service and the Director of the Geriatric Hip Fracture Program of the Hospital for Joint Diseases’ Orthopedic Institute and as the Surgeon in Chief of the Hospital of Joint Diseases.

Dr. Zuckerman has written over 250 publications, including articles in Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics, Journal of Shoulder & Elbow Surgery, Clinical Orthopedics, Orthopedic Trauma and Geriatrics. He has also edited or co-authored 14 textbooks. Dr. Zuckerman is a national and international lecturer on a range of orthopedic surgery topics. He is a member of several professional societies, including the American Orthopedic Association, American Shoulder and Elbow Surgeons, New York Academy of Medicine and the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. He was past president of the American Shoulder and Elbow Society and of the American Academy of Orthopedic Surgeons. Dr. Zuckerman is a recognized international leader and expert in shoulder, hip, and knee surgery.
