Keith L. Black, M.D.
Dr. Keith L. Black graduated from the University of Michigan Medical School and completed a residency in neurosurgery at University of Michigan Medical Center. He is a board certified neurosurgeon with over 30 years of experience. In addition to serving as chairman of the Department of Neurosurgery, he is also a Professor at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, director of Maxine Dunitz Neurosurgical Institute, and director of the Johnnie L. Cochran, Jr. Brain Tumor Center. Before coming to Cedars-Sinai, he served as a Professor of Neurosurgery at University of California – Los Angeles for ten years.
As a specialist in the surgical treatment of meningioma, malignant brain tumors, pituitary disorders, and trigeminal neuralgia; Dr. Black has performed over 8,000 surgeries, including more than 5,000 brain tumor operations. Dr. Black has conducted research focusing on enabling chemotherapy to cross the blood-brain barrier, vaccine development for brain tumors, and optical technology for brain mapping. His work has been profiled in numerous professional medical journals and has published over 260 articles since authoring his first at age 17. He is on the editorial board of several academic journals including Gene Therapy and Molecular Biology, Neurosurgery Quarterly, Frontiers in Bioscience, and Neurological Research. Also, he has published his own book entitled Brain Surgeon: A Doctor’s Inspiring Encounters with Mortality and Miracles.
Dr. Black maintains professional memberships with numerous medical organizations including the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, Neurosurgical Society of America, and the Academy of Neurological Surgery. He is on the National Institutes of Health’s Board of Scientific Counselors for Neurological Disorders and Stroke. For his work with the National Institute of Health he was awarded the Jacob Javits Award in 2000.
