Lawrence R. Lustig, M.D.
Dr. Lustig’s clinical focus is the care for disorders related to the ear and base of the skull, treating adults as well as children. Common surgeries he performs include cochlear implantation for profound deafness, tympanoplasty and mastoidectomy for chronic ear infections, cholesteatoma due to stapedectomy for otosclerosis, and assisting the neurosurgical team to remove skull base tumors (most commonly, vestibular schwannomas). Dr. Lustig also sees patients with a variety of balance disorders relating to the ear. In addition to his surgical and clinical accomplishments, Dr. Lustig is a prolific researcher, focusing primarily on the underlying causes of hearing loss and the physiology of chemical receptors in the ear.
He earned his medical degree from the University of California San Francisco in California, where he also trained as a resident in Otolaryngology. He continued his medical training as a Neurotology fellow at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland. During his tenure at Johns Hopkins, Dr. Lustig attained the rank of associate professor of Otolaryngology and was a member of the Johns Hopkins Listening Center and the cochlear implant program surgical team.
Dr. Lustig is a member of numerous professional societies, including the American Academy of Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery, the Association for Research in Otolaryngology, the North American Skull Base Society, and the Society for Neuroscience. In 2001, Dr. Lustig was awarded the George T. Nager M.D. Award for Excellence in Teaching at Johns Hopkins. Dr. Lustig has also been award several research grants, including the American Academy of Otolaryngology- Head and Neck Surgery Foundation Grant Award and the Clinician Scientist Training award from the National Institutes of Deafness and Communicative Disorders. He has also authored 35 peer-reviewed publications, 9 review articles, 16 book chapters and a book.
