Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery, Pediatric Spine Surgery

Dr. Paul Sponseller has been part of the Johns Hopkins Hospital Staff since 1986 and now holds the position of Chief of the Division of Pediatric Orthopaedics. Additionally, he acts as a staff physician at Kennedy Krieger Institute and Greater Baltimore Medical Center and as a consulting physician at Mount Washington Pediatric Hospital. He performs an average of over 500 surgical procedures per year. His clinical interests include scoliosis and other spine deformities, trauma and Marfan syndrome.

Dr. Sponseller has been recognized on several occasions for his excellence in teaching and research. He was named Outstanding Teacher by Union Memorial Orthopedic Program and was twice awarded the Teacher of the Year in Orthopedic Surgery by Johns Hopkins Hospital. He was also given the Yamaguchi Award for Best Paper in Pediatrics by the American Urological Association and the Arthur H. Heune Award for career research by the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America. Dr. Sponseller’s research interests include scoliosis etiology and treatment, pediatric skeletal trauma, genetic diseases and bladder exstrophy. He has been published in over 100 scientific papers and has written and/or contributed to many books, book chapters and articles. Currently, his clinical and research projects are Etiology of “Idiopathic” scoliosis, Natural History of Marfan skeletal disorders and Biomechanical analysis of Bladder Exstrophy.

Presently, Dr. Sponseller is a member of several Medical Boards and Associations, including: Board of Directors and Research Committee Member of the Pediatric Orthopedic Society of North America, Medical Board Member for both the International Rett Syndrome Association and the Cornelia deLange Syndrome Association and Member of the CME Committee for the Scoliosis Research Society. He is also a reviewer for several journals, including: the Journal of the American Medical Association, Journal of Bone and Joint Surgery and Journal of Pediatric Orthopedics. Dr. Sponseller has traveled to Guyana, South America on three separate occasions to volunteer as a Pediatric Orthopedic Surgery for Project Dawn while simultaneously teaching medical students, fellows and residents.
