Richard G. Azizkhan, M.D.

Pediatric Surgery

Dr. Richard Azizkhan is currently the Chief Executive Officer and President of Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in Omaha, Nebraska. Prior to joining Children’s Hospital & Medical Center in 2015, Dr. Azizkhan was the first recipient of the Lester W. Martin Chair in pediatric surgery and additionally served as the Surgeon-in-Chief of the Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He previously served as the Surgeon-in-Chief and Director of the pediatric surgery training program at Children’s Hospital of Buffalo in Buffalo, New York. He specializes in complex mediastinal airway disorders, surgical oncology, neonatal anomalies, chest wall deformities, vascular malformations, esophageal disorders, pediatric trauma, and epidermolysis bullosa.
As the director of the Pediatric Surgery Training Program, Dr. Azizkhan presided over all surgical educational programs at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital Medical Center. He is also on the Executive Committee of the American Academy of Pediatrics Surgical Section and also serves as the Program Chairman for Pediatric Surgery American College of Surgeons.
An avid teacher and author, Dr. Azizkhan has published over 200 articles in peer-reviewed journals. He also co-wrote a book titled, Operative Pediatric Surgery. He acted as the Project Coordinator for Cincinnati Children’s International Medical Education Exchange Program with clinicians and medical students from Bosnia and Croatia. His research interests include trauma systems, injury prevention, fetal lung development, vascular malformations and solid tumors in childhood.
Dr. Azizkhan participates in a number of professional organizations, including the American College of Surgeons, Society of Laparoendoscopic Surgeons, Society of Surgical Oncology, American College of Surgeons and the Association for Advancement of Science.
