Spencer K. Koerner, M.D.

Prior to his appointment as the Director for International Health and Telemedicine, Dr. Koerner served as Director of the Division of Pulmonary and Critical Care Medicine from 1977 to 1996. While at this appointment, his research focused on lung transplantation, acute respiratory distress syndrome and primary pulmonary hypertension.

Dr. Koerner obtained a doctorate degree and a research fellowship in Biochemistry from the Chicago Medical School in Illinois. He continued his post-medical training at the Montefiore Hospital & Medical Center of the Albert Einstein College of Medicine, New York, where he completed an internship, residency in Medicine and a fellowship in Pulmonary Medicine. He served as Director of the Division of Pulmonary Medicine there from 1972 to 1977.

Dr. Koerner is currently associated with many medical professional organizations. They include the American Lung Association of California (Chairman), American Lung Association (Board of Directors), American Telemedicine Association, American College of Physicians and American Thoracic Society.

He has also received numerous awards for his dedicated service and work in the healthcare field, including: Board of Trustees Award from the Chicago Medical School, the John J. Scheinen Meritorious Award from the Chicago Medical School and the Honoree In The Field Of Medicine from the American Lung Association of Los Angeles County.

In addition he has published over 90 research papers as well as over 80 abstracts and presentations. His research has been sponsored by the NIH as well as private organizations and trustee funds including; Burroughs Wellcome Fund, Miles Pharmaceuticals and Sidney Stern Memorial Trust.
