Walter J. Stark, M.D.
Dr. Stark is a Professor of Ophthalmology and Director of the Walter J. Stark and Margaret C. Mosher Center for Cataract and Corneal Disease at the Wilmer Eye Institute, at the Johns Hopkins School of Medicine in Baltimore, Maryland. Both institutions’ goals are alleviating blindness caused by corneal disease.
He obtained his M.D. from the University of Oklahoma, School of Medicine. He completed an internship at the Duke University Hospital and fulfilled his residency training in ophthalmology at the Wilmer Eye Institute. Dr. Stark’s contribution was key to the development of the Medical Eye Bank of Maryland and Tissue Banks International. Currently, he serves as Medical Director to both organizations, which their goal is alleviating blindness caused by corneal disease. Dr. Stark has been a national leader in the area of corneal transplantation, and the use of Excimer laser and Intraocular lens implantation for rehabilitation patients with visual disability.
Dr. Stark is a consultant and former chairman of the Ophthalmic Devices Panel of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration. He has received numerous honors, including a Special Citation from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration Commissioner for his Expert and Precedent-Setting Medical and Scientific Ophthalmic Device Advice to the FDA.
Dr. Stark was awarded the First Visiting Professorship at Zhongshan Ophthalmic Center, Sun Yat-Sen University of Medical Sciences, Guangzhou in The People’s Republic of China. In 1991, Dr. Stark’s patients endowed the Walter J. Stark Distinguished Professorship at the Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. Most recently, in 2003, he received the American Academy of Ophthalmology’s Life Achievement Honor Award, among the highest honors awarded in the field.
He also contributes to numerous ophthalmology journals and has served as visiting professor at universities throughout the United States and around the world.
